Landscape Design — Rottingdean, Brighton
The Sweeps is a landscape design for Rottingdean in Brighton, commissioned by Rottingdean Parish Council and Fairfax Properties to celebrate the village's rich cultural heritage.
The design draws inspiration from two of Rottingdean's most iconic landmarks. The stunning stained glass windows of St Margaret's Church — created by Edward Burne-Jones and Morris & Co — are reinterpreted through gabion baskets filled with varying aggregates, coloured stones and glass, capturing the play of light and texture in the landscape itself. The sweeping form and orientation of the design echo the four sails of the historic Beacon Mill, grounding the intervention in the rhythms and silhouette of the village.
The result is a landscape that is quietly celebratory — a meeting point of art, history and place, rooted in what makes Rottingdean distinctive.
