Community Garden — Axbridge, Somerset
The Mint takes its inspiration from Axbridge's rich heritage — in particular the enigmatic presence of a mint that operated in the town over a century ago, whose precise location has since been lost to time. The design gives form to this absence: two symbolic coins, as though unearthed in an archaeological dig, shape the garden's plan and give the space its identity.
Within these forms, the planting blossoms into an edible garden where fragrant herbs, berries and seasonal wildflowers mingle in a layered tapestry of colour and texture. Informal seating areas and picnic spaces are woven throughout, inviting residents to linger, gather and connect with the landscape around them.
Though the exact location of the historic mint may never be known, its legacy lives on — quietly, generously — in this small but considered community garden in the heart of Axbridge.
