• The extension and retrofit of The Edge delivers a carefully considered programme of works to Friction Arts’ much-loved community venue in Digbeth. The project transforms a former light-industrial building into an expanded, accessible and energy-efficient arts space while retaining the building’s distinctive character and cultural identity.

Working closely with the client, the scheme maximises the potential of the existing structure through a rear extension and internal reconfiguration, creating additional ancillary accommodation across two levels and an accessible roof terrace opening up new possibilities for events, workshops and community use. Enhanced access, improved spatial flexibility and a more visible presence on Cheapside ensure the building remains open, welcoming and adaptable.

A fabric-first sustainability strategy underpins the design. External insulation, improved airtightness, high-performance glazing and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery deliver significant performance gains.

The result is a contemporary, inclusive and future-ready home that strengthens Friction Arts’ ability to foster creativity, conversation and connection across the communities it serves.
