Surrey Unearthed is a site-specific sculptural installation that serves as both a testament to history and a point of reflection — a work rooted in the landscape from which it emerged, and slowly returning to it.
The project draws on the rich industrial past of Surrey and its evolving relationship with the surrounding landscape, taking inspiration from the geological palette of the region, the monolithic mass of the Watts Chapel and the verdant woodland that defines the area. These references coalesce into a form that feels ancient and inevitable — as though it has always been there.
The sculpture offers a tranquil space for introspection. Visitors are invited to lie within the form, the landscape unfolding above and around them — sky, canopy and the sounds of nature framing a moment of stillness. It is an immersive experience that shifts with the light, the season and the individual.
Slowly and steadily, the sculpture begins to dissolve back into the earth from which it arose. It is a poignant metaphor for the passage of time — a reminder of the transient nature of all things, and of the deep, enduring interconnection between humanity, industry and the natural world.
